Gujarat State Economy

Comes back often6 min readGS2

Gujarat's economy is structurally unusual: a small share of India's population producing a much larger share of its manufacturing and exports. Learn the shape of the economy rather than year-specific figures, which change every budget.

01

Mental model

Gujarat's economy is best held as an inverted national pyramid. Nationally, services dominate output and agriculture dominates employment. In Gujarat, manufacturing and industry take an unusually large share of state output — well above the all-India pattern — which is why Gujarat is described as India's manufacturing and export powerhouse despite holding only about five per cent of the country's population. The three legs holding this up are the coastline and ports, the petro-chemical resource base, and an early, business-friendly industrial policy tradition. The standing critique that goes with it: high growth on output and exports, weaker relative performance on social indicators such as nutrition, child sex ratio and rural health — so remember Gujarat as strong on the economic column and mixed on the human development column.

Associations

A short trigger on the left, everything it pulls with it on the right.

  • Small in people, large in factories.

Gujarat holds roughly five per cent of India's population but contributes a far higher share of industrial output and merchandise exports. That single asymmetry is the thing to be able to state — it explains the state's high per capita income, its urbanisation, and its exposure to global trade cycles.

  • Vibrant Gujarat is the investment shop window.

The Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, held periodically since 2003, is the state's flagship investor-facing event, where memoranda of understanding are signed with domestic and foreign investors. Questions usually ask when it started, not what it raised.

Things to remember

The night-before list. Short enough to recall cold.

  • 1Gujarat's economy is manufacturing-heavy: the secondary sector contributes an unusually large share of state output compared with the national pattern.
  • 2The state is consistently among India's largest exporters of merchandise, helped by its ports and its petrochemical and diamond industries.
  • 3The Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit has been held since 2003 as the state's principal investment promotion platform.
  • 4Gujarat's per capita income is above the national average, but the state's development indicators in health and nutrition have historically lagged its income rank.
  • 5The state's economic geography is lopsided: the industrial 'golden corridor' from Vapi to Mehsana concentrates most manufacturing, leaving parts of Saurashtra, Kachchh and the tribal east behind.
04

In detail

  • Gujarat holds roughly 5 per cent of India's population and about 6 per cent of its land area, but contributes a much larger share of national industrial output and merchandise exports — this disproportion is the core fact of the state's economy.
  • The secondary sector's share in Gujarat's Gross State Domestic Product is substantially higher than the corresponding share of industry in India's GDP, making Gujarat one of the most industrialised states in the country.
  • Gujarat was formed on 1 May 1960 when the bilingual Bombay State was split into Gujarat and Maharashtra; Gandhinagar became its purpose-built capital.
  • The state government publishes the Socio-Economic Review along with its annual budget, and it is the standard source for Gujarat's Gross State Domestic Product, sectoral shares and per capita income figures.
  • Gujarat's per capita income is consistently above the national average, but the state's record on human development indicators such as child nutrition and the sex ratio has been weaker relative to its income level — the standard 'growth versus development' debate in Gujarat's case.
  • Vibrant Gujarat, the biennial global investors' summit begun in 2003, is the state's flagship investment promotion platform and a standard example of state-level economic diplomacy.

Where people slip

  • Do not quote a specific share of national GDP or exports as current — those figures move every year. State the structural point and, if a year is given in the question, answer for that year.
