Soils
Soil questions are almost always 'which soil, which crop, which region'. Six types carry nearly all the marks, and two of them — alluvial and black — cover most of Gujarat's farmland.
Mental model
Learn each soil as a locked triplet — parent material, region, defining crop — so pulling any one thread drags the other two out. Alluvial: river deposits, Northern Plains, wheat and rice. Black (regur): weathered Deccan lava, Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh-Gujarat, cotton. Red and yellow: crystalline igneous rock, eastern and southern peninsula, millets and pulses. Laterite: heavy rain plus leaching, Western Ghats and Kerala, tea, coffee and cashew. Arid: desert, Rajasthan, needs irrigation. Never memorise soils as a plain list; memorise them as three-part sets.

Black soil = cotton = Deccan trap.
Black or regur soil forms from weathered basalt of the Deccan trap, holds moisture well, cracks in summer and is the classic cotton soil. That single chain explains why cotton dominates Saurashtra and central Gujarat.
Alluvial is the biggest; laterite is the leached one.
Alluvial soil covers the largest area of India and is the most fertile, deposited by rivers. Laterite forms under heavy rain with alternating wet and dry seasons, which leaches out silica and leaves iron and aluminium — poor for most crops, good for tea, coffee and cashew.

In detail
- Alluvial soil covers the largest area of India and supports the densest populations; it is rich in potash, phosphoric acid and lime but generally deficient in nitrogen and humus.
- Black soil (regur) is formed from weathered Deccan Trap lava, is clayey and highly moisture-retentive, swells when wet and develops deep cracks when dry — this self-ploughing crack pattern is a favourite examination point, and its high moisture retention is why it suits cotton.
- Red soil gets its colour from the diffusion of iron in crystalline and metamorphic rocks, not from high iron fertility; it looks yellow when it occurs in hydrated form.
- Laterite soil forms in areas of high temperature and heavy rainfall where intense leaching washes away lime and silica; it is poor in fertility, hardens irreversibly on exposure and has long been cut into building bricks, which is what gives it its name (from Latin 'later', meaning brick).
- The three main forms of soil degradation to distinguish are erosion (removal of topsoil by water or wind, producing gullies and badlands as in the Chambal ravines), salinity and alkalinity (caused by over-irrigation and waterlogging), and desertification in arid margins.
Where people slip
- Black soil is fertile for cotton but low in nitrogen and organic matter. An option calling it rich in nitrogen is wrong.
