Gujarat's festival calendar mixes pan-Indian festivals with state-specific ones. The state-specific ones — Uttarayan, Rann Utsav, Modhera Dance Festival — are what the exam actually tests, because the pan-Indian ones need no state knowledge.

Unlike most Indian festivals, which follow the lunar calendar and shift dates yearly, Uttarayan (Makar Sankranti) is solar and falls on 14 January almost every year. Ahmedabad hosts an International Kite Festival around this date — the state-tourism angle GPSC likes to test.

- The Tarnetar fair is held at Trinetreshwar Mahadev in Surendranagar district around Bhadrapad, and is famous for its embroidered Tarnetar chhatri (umbrella).
- The Bhavnath fair is held at the foot of Girnar in Junagadh on Maha Shivratri, and the Vautha fair is held at the confluence of the Sabarmati and Vatrak near Dholka on Kartik Purnima.
- Navratri is Gujarat's best-known festival, celebrated for nine nights with Garba in worship of the Mother Goddess, and the Bhadarvi Poonam fair at Ambaji in Banaskantha draws lakhs of pilgrims on foot.
