Awards

Occasional5 min readGS1

This overlaps closely with the current-affairs awards topic, but the syllabus separates them by focus: here the emphasis is on Gujarat's own state honours as an institution, not on tracking this year's winners.

01

Mental model

Awards come in tiers, and the trick is to fix the TIER ORDER once and read every question against it. NATIONAL CIVILIAN TIER: Bharat Ratna at the top, then Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri — announced on Republic Day, conferred by the President, and Padma awards are not to be used as a title with one's name. GALLANTRY TIER: wartime Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra; peacetime Ashoka Chakra, Kirti Chakra, Shaurya Chakra. LITERARY AND CULTURAL TIER: Jnanpith (highest literary honour), Sahitya Akademi, Sangeet Natak Akademi. GUJARAT STATE TIER: the state's own honours in literature and public service, such as the Narmad Chandrak and the state's Gaurav Puraskar awards. For Gujarat GK, know which Gujaratis sit in which tier — that is what is actually asked, not the tier definition itself.

Associations

A short trigger on the left, everything it pulls with it on the right.

  • Ranjitram for literature, Narmad for a specific literary form, Gujarat Gaurav for broader achievement.

Three named state honours, three different scopes — the Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak for lifetime literary contribution generally, the Narmad Chandrak tied more specifically to prose and essay writing in the reformist tradition Narmad himself represented, and the Gujarat Gaurav Puraskar for achievement across any field, not literature alone.

03

Things to remember

The night-before list. Short enough to recall cold.

  • 1The Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak, instituted in 1928, is Gujarat's oldest and most prestigious state literary honour.
  • 2The Narmad Chandrak is named after Narmadashankar Dave (Narmad), a 19th-century reformist writer regarded as a pioneer of modern Gujarati prose.
  • 3The Gujarat Gaurav Puraskar is a state honour recognising outstanding achievement by individuals across fields, not restricted to literature.
  • 4State awards are distinct from and additional to national honours such as the Padma awards or the Jnanpith — a Gujarati can hold both a state and a national honour.
04

In detail

  • The Bharat Ratna is India's highest civilian award; Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri follow in that order of precedence.
  • The Param Vir Chakra is the highest wartime gallantry award and the Ashoka Chakra the highest peacetime gallantry award.
  • Gujaratis awarded the Bharat Ratna include Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Morarji Desai.
  • The Jnanpith Award is India's highest literary honour, and Gujarati recipients include Umashankar Joshi, Pannalal Patel, Rajendra Shah and Raghuvir Chaudhari.
  • The Narmad Chandrak is a well-known Gujarati literary award instituted in memory of the poet Narmad.
05

Where people slip

  • The Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak and the Jnanpith Award are not the same thing — one is a Gujarat state honour, the other a national one across all Indian languages.
