Solanki & Medieval Gujarat
The stretch from Vanraj Chavda to Karan Vaghela is the golden age of Gujarat as a distinct political unit, run from one capital — Anhilwad Patan. Almost every heritage monument GPSC asks about, and two of Gujarat's UNESCO sites, belong to this period or the Sultanate that followed it.
Mental model
The Solankis (Chaulukyas of Anhilwad Patan) are best held as 'Gujarat's golden age, told through buildings'. Four names, four monuments: Mularaja founds the dynasty at Patan; Bhima I is on the throne when Mahmud of Ghazni sacks Somnath, and his queen Udayamati builds the Rani ki Vav; Siddharaja Jayasimha is the empire-builder linked with Sahastralinga Talav at Patan and the Malava conquest; Kumarapala turns to Jainism under Hemachandracharya. After them, Vaghelas (Visaladeva, then Karan Vaghela) — and Karan's defeat by Alauddin Khalji's forces in 1299 ends Rajput rule in Gujarat.
Associations
A short trigger on the left, everything it pulls with it on the right.
Vanraj → Mulraj → Bhima → Siddharaj → Kumarpal → Karan.
Six names in order carry the whole chapter. Vanraj Chavda founds Patan; Mulraj I starts the Solanki line; Bhima I is on the throne when Mahmud of Ghazni raids Somnath; Siddharaj Jaysinh is the builder-king; Kumarpal is the Jain convert under Hemchandracharya; Karan Vaghela is the last, defeated by Alauddin Khalji.
Siddharaj builds the tank, Udayamati builds the stepwell.
Two Patan monuments, two different patrons, and questions swap them constantly. Sahastralinga Talav is Siddharaj Jaysinh's. Rani ki Vav is queen Udayamati's, in memory of her husband Bhima I — a UNESCO site since 2014 and the monument on the hundred-rupee note.
Begada = be gadh = two forts.
Mahmud Begada earned the name by taking two great forts — Junagadh and Champaner. Champaner-Pavagadh is Gujarat's other UNESCO World Heritage Site, and he moved his capital there as Muhammadabad.
Things to remember
The night-before list. Short enough to recall cold.
- 1Vanraj Chavda founded Anhilwad Patan in the eighth century; Mulraj I founded the Solanki (Chaulukya) dynasty around the middle of the tenth.
- 2Mahmud of Ghazni raided the Somnath temple in 1026, during the reign of Bhima I.
- 3Siddharaj Jaysinh built the Sahastralinga Talav at Patan and the Rudra Mahalaya at Siddhpur, and carried the title Siddhachakravarti.
- 4Kumarpal, guided by Hemchandracharya, made Jainism a state-favoured faith; Hemchandracharya wrote the Siddha-Hema-Shabdanushasana grammar.
- 5The Sun Temple at Modhera, on the Pushpavati, belongs to Bhima I's reign — its stepped kund is called the Surya Kund or Rama Kund.
- 6Karan Vaghela, the last Hindu ruler of Gujarat, was defeated by Alauddin Khalji's forces in 1299.
- 7The independent Gujarat Sultanate began in 1407 under Muzaffar Shah I; Ahmed Shah I founded Ahmedabad in 1411 on the Sabarmati; Akbar ended the Sultanate in 1573.
In detail
- Mularaja founded Solanki rule around 942 CE with Anhilwad Patan as capital.
- Mahmud of Ghazni raided and plundered the Somnath temple in 1025-26 CE, during the reign of Bhima I.
- Rani ki Vav at Patan, a stepwell built by Queen Udayamati in memory of Bhima I, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and appears on the 100-rupee note.
- Hemachandracharya, the great Jain scholar of Kumarapala's court, wrote the Sanskrit-Prakrit grammar 'Siddha-Hema-Shabdanushasana' and is called 'Kalikalsarvagna'.
- The Modhera Sun Temple in Mehsana district, with its Surya Kund stepped tank and Sabha Mandap, was built in the time of Bhima I — the signature specimen of Solanki (Maru-Gurjara) temple architecture.
Where people slip
- Rani ki Vav was commissioned by Udayamati, not by Siddharaj Jaysinh. Sahastralinga Talav is the Siddharaj one.
- Ahmedabad (1411) was founded by Ahmed Shah I of the Sultanate, not by a Solanki king. The Solanki capital was Patan.
