Maha Gujarat Movement
Gujarat did not exist as a state until 1960. The Maha Gujarat movement is the short, sharp agitation that split bilingual Bombay State into Gujarat and Maharashtra — and it is the single most reliable Gujarat-history question in the paper.
Mental model
Maha Gujarat is a mirror-image story: when the bilingual Bombay State was created in 1956, Marathi speakers demanded Samyukta Maharashtra and Gujarati speakers demanded Maha Gujarat — two movements, one outcome, both states born on the SAME day, 1 May 1960. Fix the chain: States Reorganisation Act 1956 keeps Gujarat inside bilingual Bombay → 8 August 1956 firing on students at the Congress House in Ahmedabad creates the martyrs → Indulal Yagnik ('Indu Chacha') leads the Maha Gujarat Janata Parishad → Bombay Reorganisation Act 1960 splits the state → Gujarat is formed on 1 May with Ahmedabad as first capital, Jivraj Mehta as first Chief Minister and Mehdi Nawaz Jung as first Governor, and the capital later moves to the newly built Gandhinagar.
Associations
A short trigger on the left, everything it pulls with it on the right.
1956 refused, 1960 granted.
The States Reorganisation Act of 1956 reorganised India on language lines but kept Bombay bilingual — that refusal is what starts the movement. Four years of agitation later, the Bombay Reorganisation Act splits the state, and Gujarat and Maharashtra are both born on 1 May 1960.
Indulal Yagnik is 'Indu Chacha'.
The Maha Gujarat Janata Parishad was led by Indulal Yagnik, known affectionately as Indu Chacha. If a question names a leader of the movement, this is almost always the answer.
Things to remember
The night-before list. Short enough to recall cold.
- 1The States Reorganisation Act 1956 created a bilingual Bombay State covering Gujarati and Marathi speaking areas.
- 2The Maha Gujarat Janata Parishad, led by Indulal Yagnik, demanded a separate Gujarati-speaking state.
- 3The firing on students near Congress House in Ahmedabad on 8 August 1956 gave the movement its martyrs; the Shahid Smarak at Lal Darwaja commemorates them.
- 4Gujarat was formed on 1 May 1960, celebrated as Gujarat Sthapana Din; Maharashtra was formed the same day.
- 5Jivraj Narayan Mehta was Gujarat's first Chief Minister and Mehdi Nawaz Jung its first Governor.
- 6Ahmedabad served as the first capital; the purpose-built capital at Gandhinagar was occupied from 1970.
In detail
- Gujarat state was formed on 1 May 1960 under the Bombay Reorganisation Act, 1960, on the same day as Maharashtra; 1 May is celebrated as Gujarat Sthapana Din.
- Indulal Yagnik led the Maha Gujarat Janata Parishad and is remembered as the movement's foremost leader.
- The firing on students in Ahmedabad on 8 August 1956 gave the movement its martyrs; the Shahid Smarak near Lal Darwaja commemorates them.
- Jivraj Mehta was Gujarat's first Chief Minister and Mehdi Nawaz Jung its first Governor; Ahmedabad served as the first capital before Gandhinagar was built.
- The States Reorganisation Act of 1956 was based on the report of the States Reorganisation Commission headed by Fazl Ali, with K. M. Panikkar and H. N. Kunzru as members.
Where people slip
- 1 May 1960 is the formation date, not 1956. 1956 is the year of the Act that refused separation and triggered the movement.
- Gandhinagar was not the capital at formation. Ahmedabad was, until the shift around 1970.
