Environment technology in Gujarat is mostly energy technology. The state is a national leader in installed renewable capacity, and its flagship projects are the ones the exam names.

Mental model

Environment technology answers one question: where does the waste GO? Sort every technology by the stream it treats — air (electrostatic precipitator, scrubber, catalytic converter), water (sewage treatment plant, effluent treatment plant, reverse osmosis), solid waste (composting, bio-methanation, waste-to-energy), or energy substitution (solar, wind, biogas, green hydrogen). Naming the stream first almost always narrows the options to one.

  • Sun in the north, wind on the coast.

    Gujarat's solar capacity is concentrated in the dry, high-radiation north and Kachchh; wind capacity runs along the coast where the sea breeze is steady. The state's hybrid park in Kachchh combines both on one site.

  • Solar over a canal saves land and water.

    Gujarat pioneered canal-top solar generation on the Narmada branch canal network: the panels need no separate land and the shade cuts evaporation from the canal. It is the state's most quoted clean-energy innovation.

In detail

  • A catalytic converter in vehicles converts carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water; it needs unleaded petrol to work.
  • Biogas from anaerobic digestion is mainly methane with carbon dioxide; the leftover slurry is used as manure.
  • Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced by electrolysis of water using renewable electricity; India runs a National Green Hydrogen Mission to promote it.
  • Bioremediation uses microbes or plants to clean contaminated soil and water; using plants specifically is called phytoremediation.
  • Gujarat's Kutch region hosts one of the world's largest hybrid renewable energy parks combining solar and wind generation.

Where people slip

  • Installed capacity is not the same as generation. A state can lead on capacity and still generate less, because solar and wind run at low capacity factors.
