Awards

Occasional5 min readGS2

Awards questions test the category, not just the winner's name — civilian honour tiers, literary prizes, and Gujarat's own state honours each have their own logic worth knowing once.

01

Mental model

Awards are examined on their RULES, not their recent recipients, so learn each award's constitution: WHO gives it (President, a ministry, an academy, a foreign body), FOR WHAT field, its RANK within its family, and its standing conditions. Two rules do most of the work — civilian honours run Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri in descending order and are announced on Republic Day; gallantry awards split into wartime (Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra) and peacetime (Ashoka Chakra, Kirti Chakra, Shaurya Chakra).

02

Associations

A short trigger on the left, everything it pulls with it on the right.

  • Bharat Ratna, then the three Padma tiers in order of rank.

Bharat Ratna is India's highest civilian honour, followed by Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri in descending order. All are announced around Republic Day. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Morarji Desai, both Gujaratis, are Bharat Ratna recipients — the natural Gujarat hook into this category.

  • The Gujarat state literary honour is named after Ranjitram Mehta.

The Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak, Gujarat's oldest and most prestigious literary award, is given annually for lifetime contribution to Gujarati literature — the state-level equivalent of thinking about the Jnanpith at the national level.

Things to remember

The night-before list. Short enough to recall cold.

  • 1The four civilian honour tiers, in descending order, are Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
  • 2Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1991, posthumous) and Morarji Desai (1991) are among the Gujarati recipients of the Bharat Ratna.
  • 3The Jnanpith Award is India's highest literary honour, given for a body of work in any Indian language.
  • 4The Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak, instituted in memory of Ranjitram Vavabhai Mehta, is Gujarat's oldest state literary award.
  • 5The Gujarat Gaurav Puraskar and the Narmad Chandrak are other prominent state-level honours for achievement and literature respectively.
04

In detail

  • The Bharat Ratna is India's highest civilian award, conferred by the President for exceptional service; it can be awarded posthumously.
  • The Param Vir Chakra is the highest wartime gallantry award and the Ashoka Chakra its peacetime equivalent.
  • The Jnanpith Award is India's highest literary honour, given for writing in the languages recognised in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
  • The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the highest recognition in Indian cinema and is conferred by the Government of India; the Sahitya Akademi and Sangeet Natak Akademi awards come from the respective national academies.
  • Nobel Prizes are announced each October and awarded on 10 December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death; there is no Nobel Prize in mathematics.
05

Where people slip

  • The Bharat Ratna is not restricted to a fixed annual quota or category the way Padma awards are announced in numbers — treat it as rare and exceptional, not routine.
