Sports
Sports current affairs is mostly a lookup exercise: host cities, medal counts and record names. Fix the format — Olympics every four years, Asian Games every four years offset by two, Commonwealth Games every four — and slot events into it.
Mental model
Sport questions are mostly about STRUCTURE, which never goes stale, and only sometimes about last month's winner, which does. So learn the calendar and the rules: which event runs on a four-year cycle (Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, football World Cup) versus a two-year or annual cycle; how many players a side has; what the top domestic trophy is in each sport (Ranji in cricket, Santosh in football, Subroto for schools); and which award goes to a player versus a coach. Learn cycles and trophies first, winners last.
Associations
A short trigger on the left, everything it pulls with it on the right.
Host city plus year is the standard question.
For any major event — Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, cricket or hockey World Cups — the two facts worth fixing together are the host city and the year. Everything else (medal tally, top scorer) changes faster than it can be usefully memorised for a prelims exam.
Gujarat hosted the 2022 National Games.
Gujarat's own sports-current-affairs hook is hosting the 36th National Games in 2022, spread across multiple cities including Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Gandhinagar — the state's largest multi-sport event to date.
Things to remember
The night-before list. Short enough to recall cold.
- 1The Olympic Games are held every four years; the most recent Summer Games and their host city are worth fixing precisely.
- 2Gujarat hosted the 36th National Games in 2022, across venues in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Gandhinagar.
- 3The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is the world's largest cricket stadium by seating capacity.
- 4The Khel Mahakumbh is Gujarat's own large-scale grassroots sports talent programme, run annually across the state.
- 5The Khelo India scheme is the central government's programme to identify and support young sporting talent nationally.
In detail
- The Summer Olympic Games and the football World Cup are both held every four years; the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games also run on a four-year cycle.
- Team sizes on the field: cricket 11, football 11, hockey 11, kabaddi 7, volleyball 6, basketball 5.
- India's national sports awards include the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna for the highest sporting achievement, the Arjuna Award for consistent outstanding performance, and the Dronacharya Award for coaches.
- Hockey is associated with the Dhyan Chand legacy and India's eight Olympic gold medals in the sport; the Ranji Trophy is the premier domestic first-class cricket tournament.
- The Khel Mahakumbh is Gujarat's state-level mass sports competition, run by the state government to identify talent from the taluka level upward.
Where people slip
- Do not confuse the National Games (a domestic multi-sport event) with the Asian Games or Commonwealth Games, which are international.
