Four flagship protected areas, four signature species. Gir (Junagadh) is the Asiatic lion's only wild range. Velavadar Blackbuck National Park (Bhavnagar) is grassland built around the blackbuck and harrier roosts. Nal Sarovar (near Ahmedabad) is a bird sanctuary and Ramsar site. The Marine National Park in the Gulf of Kachchh protects coral reefs, mangroves and marine mammals including the Indus river dolphin nearby.

A wildlife sanctuary permits limited, regulated human activity; a national park is more strictly protected, with grazing and private rights generally not allowed. The same patch of forest can be upgraded from sanctuary to national park status, which is why several Gujarat sites carry both terms in their history.
