Industries of Gujarat
Gujarat's industry is best read as four clusters, each with a city attached: textiles at Ahmedabad, petrochemicals at Vadodara and Jamnagar, diamonds at Surat, ceramics at Morbi. Add the policy layer — GIDC estates, Dholera, the Delhi-Mumbai corridor — and the topic is covered.

Gujarat's industry is a chain that starts at the sea and ends at the export shed: crude and gas come ashore or arrive at a port → refineries and crackers at Jamnagar, Vadodara, Dahej and Hazira turn them into petrochemicals → those feed plastics, fertiliser, dyes and drugs in the Ankleshwar-Vapi-Vadodara belt → and the finished goods leave through the same ports. Alongside this petro-chain run two older craft-rooted clusters: textiles at Ahmedabad and Surat (Surat also for man-made fibre) and diamond cutting and polishing at Surat. - Jamnagar hosts one of the world's largest petroleum refining complexes, and Gujarat accounts for a very large share of India's total refining capacity, alongside the public sector refinery at Koyali near Vadodara.
- Surat is the world's leading centre for cutting and polishing diamonds, handling the large majority of the world's rough diamonds, and it is also India's biggest man-made fibre and textile processing centre.
- Ahmedabad was historically called the Manchester of India for its cotton textile mills, which grew from the mid-nineteenth century on locally grown cotton and the port outlet at Khambhat and later Kandla.
- Vadodara-Ankleshwar-Bharuch is the chemical and petrochemical heartland, with the Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals plant and the IPCL petrochemical complex near Vadodara and one of Asia's largest chemical estates at Ankleshwar; Vapi is another dense chemical estate at the Maharashtra border.
- Alang in Bhavnagar district is one of the world's largest ship-breaking yards, favoured because the high tidal range of the Gulf of Khambhat lets ships be beached far up the shore.
- Other place-pinned industries worth knowing: Sanand and Halol for automobiles, Hazira near Surat for steel, gas and heavy engineering, Mundra and Dahej for port-based industrial estates, and Morbi for ceramic tiles and clocks.

- GIFT City is at Gandhinagar, not Ahmedabad, and it is a financial services centre, not an industrial estate.
