Gujarati literature runs in four eras, and each era has one 'gatekeeper' name that unlocks it. MEDIEVAL/BHAKTI: Narsinh Mehta, called Adi Kavi, the fountainhead — followed by Mirabai, Akho (satirical chhappa), Premanand (akhyan), Shamal Bhatt (padyavarta), Dayaram (garbi). SUDHARAK/REFORM ERA: Narmad, who wrote 'Jai Jai Garvi Gujarat' and compiled the dictionary Narmakosh, with Dalpatram beside him. PANDIT ERA: Govardhanram Tripathi's 'Saraswatichandra' — the landmark Gujarati novel — with Manilal Dwivedi and Narsinhrao Divetia. GANDHI ERA AND AFTER: Gandhi's own writing, Kaka Kalelkar, K. M. Munshi, Jhaverchand Meghani (the folk-literature collector Gandhi called 'Rashtriya Shayar'), Umashankar Joshi and Sundaram, then modern poets like Rajendra Shah and Labhshankar Thaker. Narsinh Mehta (15th century) is called the Adi Kavi, the first poet, of Gujarati literature — his bhajans, including one Gandhi loved, anchor the devotional era. Centuries later, Umashankar Joshi became the first Gujarati writer to win the Jnanpith Award, followed by Pannalal Patel — the modern generation's two headline names.
Govardhanram wrote Saraswatichandra; K. M. Munshi wrote Gujarat's history as fiction.
